About 1,500 people attended the funeral today of a Palestinian gunman who killed two Israelis last November but whose body had only just been returned by Israel.
Mr Hatem Yanin Shueiki (24) was buried in his native Hebron. The Islamic Jihad gunman was shot dead by Israeli security forces on November 4th after spraying a bus in annexed east Jerusalem with automatic rifle fire, killing two Israeli teenagers and injuring 45.
Elsewhere, Palestinian security officials have warned of a major environmental health risk after Israeli tanks moved into a Palestinian village near Deir Al Balah and closed off access to the main garbage pit in the central Gaza Strip.
The three tanks moved 600 metres into the village of Wadi Al-Salqa, where the dump is located for the towns around Deir Al-Balah and Khan Yunis, said Col Khalid Abu al-Ula, of the Israeli-Palestinian liaison office.
Garbage trucks have been unable to access the refuse tip for two days as Israel forces moved in and out of Deir Al-Balah, killing three policemen near the town, the official said.
Israeli forces had also moved into the northern Gaza Strip towns of Beit Lahia and Beit Hanoun before pulling out.
