Two brothers who were freed yesterday after a bomb charge was dropped may now issue writs claiming compensation for alleged malicious prosecution.

Mr Bernard Griffin (20) and his brother Kenneth (18) were arrested last September after a coffee-jar bomb was allegedly found in their home at Whitewell Crescent, Newtownabbey, outside Belfast.

Mr Bernard Griffin spent three months in custody, while Kenneth was released on bail soon after his arrest. The charge against them was withdrawn without explanation at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday.

Outside the court their solicitor, Mr Kevin Winters, said: "I am particularly concerned that despite numerous requests, a forensic report in relation to this alleged bomb was never made available to the defence."

Mr Winters said he would be raising his concerns with the Director of Public Prosecutions.
