Militant French farmer Mr Jose Bove faces 14 months in jail for attacks on genetically modified crops today after France's highest court threw out his bid to have the sentences overturned.
The Cour de Cassation in Paris ruled Mr Bove should serve a six-month jail sentence for a 1999 attack on a field of genetically modified rice near the southern city of Montpellier in 1999.
The decision automatically means that Mr Bove, who spent six weeks in jail earlier this year for ransacking a McDonald's restaurant, must also serve a separate eight-month sentence for an earlier attack on genetically modified crops in France.
In a statement, Mr Bove, a star of the world anti-globalisation movement, said he would appeal directly to President Mr Jacques Chirac to use his right of pardon.
