BRUSSELS - France attended its first formal meeting of Nato defence ministers for 30 years yesterday, as detailed work began on creating a greater role for Europeans. The Defence Minister, Mr Charles Millon, took up France's vacant chair, empty since Paris quit Nato's military wing in 1966 in a row about US domination.

Several ministers from the other 15 allies described the event as historic.
