Police are questioning four people today after a gunman walked into a Glasgow police station and shot a constable with a shotgun.

The gunman had walked into Shettleston police station in Glasgow shortly before 11.45 p.m. last night and fired a shotgun at an officer manning the counter.

PC John Cunningham (53) was today in a serious but stable condition after being hit in his right side.

Several hours after the shooting, armed police surrounded an address in Balintore Street, just 500 yards from the police station.

At lunchtime today, armed officers were reported to be dispersing from the scene. It was not known in what way, if any, the four people detained by police were involved in the incident last night.

At a press conference, senior officers would not disclose further details of the arrests other than that they resulted from an operation in the city's Balintore Street.

Assistant Chief Constable Mr Ricky Gray said a reason for the attack was not yet known.
