Four people were killed and 14 others were injured when a bus filled with tourists plunged 33 metres down a ravine in a national park on the Australian island of Tasmania.

Two of the injured remain in a critical condition after the accident, which happened last night during a wildlife-spotting tour of the Cradle Mountain National Park in the north-west of the island state of Tasmania.

Four others were detained in hospital and another eight were discharged after treatment for minor injuries.

A British woman was one of those killed in the accident. The British High Commission in Canberra says two more Britons could be among the other three fatalities.

The passengers, all residents at the Cradle Mountain Lodge, were from Britain, the United States, New Zealand and other Australian states.

Police set up a hotline (number 03 6230 26770) for relatives and friends.
