A former town dump on the site of the proposed €300 million redevelopment scheme for Greystones Harbour in Co Wicklow is to be the location for a block of apartments, a Bord Pleanála hearing was told yesterday.
The reopened oral hearing into plans to develop a 230-berth marina, financed by 6,000 sq m of commercial space and the sale of 341 waterside houses and apartments, was told environmental best practice did not recommend the removal of the dump.
Bord Pleanála inspector James Carroll, who presided over a hearing into redevelopment plans for the harbour last April, was told environmental best practice was the core reason for many of the issues which had proven controversial at the initial hearing.
Wicklow County Council and its private sector partners the Sispar consortium - a partnership between Sisk and Park developments - called a range of experts yesterday to provide additional information on issues raised by the board in its consideration of the project.
Dr Imelda Shanahan of TMS Environment said an on-site concrete manufacturing facility would operate six days a week, 12 hours a day on weekdays and 10 hours on Saturdays, over a period of about 21 months.
Seán Mason of Arup consult- ing engineers said the Environmental Protection Agency had been consulted on measures to deal with the former dump.
The treatment was to be based on the "proximity principle" that waste should remain in situ unless it was extremely hazardous.
