Dublin: There was major traffic disruption around Dublin last night as heavy rain early in the evening flooded some roads, forcing their closure. Dublin Fire Brigade sent 10 units to deal with the flash flooding.

On the north side, Santry was badly affected and AA Roadwatch was reporting the Port Tunnel was "seriously flooded".

A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council said while the works site of the Port Tunnel at Whitehall was badly affected, the floods on nearby roadways had been temporary and had abated by 9.30 p.m.

Up to that time, traffic was stopped in both directions on the Swords Road, and although gardaí were at the scene directing traffic, there were long delays. Flooding was also reported on the Richmond Road, Dorset Street, Whitworth Road, Eccles Street and the North Circular Road.

Main roadways in the area, including the Malahide Road at Griffith Avenue, were also badly affected. Traffic on the N3 had slowed to a halt due to flooding near the M50.

On the south side of the city, bad flooding was reported in Blackrock, especially on Newtownpark Avenue, Frascati Bypass and Lower Carysford Avenue. Also affected were Millmount, Stella Gardens, Ringsend, Carrickmines and Stillorgan.
