A hackney driver who had sex in his cab with a 13-year-old student on her way home after celebrating friends' exam results has been jailed for five years. Det Sgt Gabriel O'Gara said an attempt to murder the hackney driver had taken place an hour after the incident when a man tried to slash his throat. He suffered serious injuries and facial scars.

Denis Hogan (39), married, of Carna Road, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty to the unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl at the Industrial Estate, Kylemore Park West, on September 16th, 1998. Det Sgt O'Gara told Mr Luan O Braonain, prosecuting, the girl hired the black Mercedes hackney at a Ballyfermot depot after she had visited a friend's house. She told gardai that Hogan pulled into factories and had sexual intercourse with her.
