In Kildare, three men in their early 20s were killed when the car the were travelling in crashed on the Athy-to-Carlow road at around 6.00pm yesterday. Two of the men were brothers.

Elsewhere, a 29-year-old man was killed at about 8.20pm in Carrowroe, Co Sligo, after his motorcycle crashed at a roundabout. The man died after being taken to Sligo General Hospital.

Gardaí in Blackrock are investigating the death of a man in his 70s after he was hit by a car on Dublin's southside.

He was struck by the vehicle while crossing Newtownpark Avenue in Blackrock at 7.00pm yesterday.

So far this year 378 people have died on the State's roads, an increase of 24 on the same period last year.
