Five people died and others were injured in a rush-hour pile-up involving some 70 cars in thick fog on Austria's main east-west motorway today.

A truck stands behind a crushed car on Austria's main east-west motorway after a rush-hour pile-up involving some 100 cars near Seewalchen today.

The crash occurred in the northwestern province of Upper Austria on the A1 motorway, which links the capital Vienna in the east to Germany in the west.

The motorway in the area was closed in both directions.

OeAMTC, the motoring club which dispatches emergency services, said over 20 people were injured in the collision, many of them seriously.

The thick fog had reduced visibility to under 10 metres.
