Five youths have been arrested after an old people's home was attacked during sectarian riots in Northern Ireland.

Trouble flared after the Glasgow 'Old Firm' match between Rangers and Celtic and a police officer was injured when rival factions began hurling fireworks, bottles and stones in Derry.

Three cars were damaged during the clashes in the Fountain Street and Rossville Street areas of Derry. A nearby old people's home was also pelted with fireworks and other missiles.

There was no damage but police said residents were left highly distressed. Police said the five arrested were charged with riotous behaviour following the disturbances.

Inspector Milton Kerr, of the city's Strand Road RUC base, voiced concern at the young age of those involved in the fighting.

He also hit out at older people supplying them with fireworks and orchestrating the trouble.

Mr Kerr said: "I would urge parents to be conscious of the whereabouts of their children at all times.

"I would also ask them to remind their children that not only is it an offence to throw or discharge a firework in the street but it's also extremely dangerous." PA
