Fishery Board officials yesterday started an investigation into a large fish kill at a river in Co Monaghan. More than three kilometres of the Doohamlet river, between Ballybay town and Castleblayney, were affected.
Dead fish were removed and water samples taken as a number of possible causes were investigated, including the possibility of pollution from farmlands or industrial sources. Last night, Talbot Duffy, a spokesman for the Ballybay angling group, said: “This is a devastating blow for local fish stocks.”
He said it sparked a demand for greater care to be taken by agricultural and industrial interests throughout the country.
