Following is a list of the major fish kills this year
July 2nd (Irish Times report date):
Over 1,000 fish killed in Lickeen Lake, the main source of water supply to towns and villages in north Clare. Algae bloom over a large part of the lake was a major factor in the death of the fish, mainly brown and rainbow trout.
June 3rd:
Up to 5,000 adult bream, roach and pike were killed in the popular angling resort of Lough Gara on the Roscommon/Sligo border, and in a five-mile stretch of the River Lung, north of Ballaghaderreen. The cause was suspected to be a disease.
Mid-May to May 31st:
2,964 roach were killed in five lakes in the Dromore River Catchment, Co Cavan. Unknown cause, but over-enrichment of waters or disease was suspected.
May 27th:
1,000 young salmon were killed in Keeran river in the Dee Catchment on the Dundalk/Dublin border. The cause was listed as an agricultural source.
May 25th:
Hundreds of brown trout were killed in Cloghbrack river, Connemara. Investigations into the cause are being completed.
May 21st:
An estimated 300 trout found dead in the river Deel in west Limerick. The cause was listed as suspected effluent or industrial discharge.
May 19th:
An estimated 1,500 trout, salmon and eels were killed on the River Suir and its tributary, the Clonmore river, near Thurles, Co Tipperary. The cause was listed as a suspected agricultural discharge.
February 19th:
More than 500 trout and eels were killed in the tributary of Curaheen river, Co Cork. Lime is the suspected cause.
