The EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Franz Fischler, arrives in Dublin today for a series of meetings with the farming representatives at which he will defend the new Santer proposals on the reform of the CAP.

He will meet the Minister for Agriculture, Mr Walsh, and later the farm organisations, the agri-business sector and the media to explain the importance of the Agenda 2000 proposals.

The proposals have been under attack from the farm organisations because they involve cutting agricultural supports on beef, cereals and milk in advance of a new World Trade Agreement.
