TRADITIONAL THATCHING, martial arts and sheep shearing are among the range of events taking place at the 170th Cork Summer Show this weekend.

Organised by the Munster Agriculture Society, the show is set to attract some 25,000 visitors for its biggest programme of events to date, including the first music festival in its history.

A new book documenting the society’s 1806 origins and its development will be launched as part of the weekend’s events.

Munster Agricultural Society: the story of the Cork Showgroundsby Kieran McCarthy traces records kept by the organisers to provide an archived history of the annual show over the past two centuries.

Formerly held at the Cork Corn Market and in a portion of Cork Racecourse, the show set up its long-term home in what became known as “Showgrounds” in Ballintemple from 1891 until 2008.

It takes place this weekend at its newest location, the Greenfields site in Ballincollig, from today until Sunday.
