World champion Michael Schumacher led a Ferrari one-two in a wet first free practice session today for the San Marino Formula One Grand Prix.

The German did 15 laps and went round Imola's Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit in one minute 35.633 seconds, ahead of Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello in 1:35.688.

The McLarens of former champion Mika Hakkinen and Briton David Coulthard followed ahead of the Jordans of Italian Jarno Trulli and German Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

A second session is due to follow before the official qualifying later in the afternoon whenSchumacher will try to take a record-equalling eighth successive pole position.

Conditions were cold and slippery on the morning and cars took to the track on full wet tyres. Brazilian Luciano Burti in a Jaguar banged into the barriers early in the session after just two laps.

Schumacher's younger brother Ralf in a Williams was one of several drivers to spin on the track.
