A rare flag used in the Fenian Rising has sold at auction in Dublin for €52,000.

The flag, which dates from 1867, was commissioned by Willie Condon, a leading Fenian at the time.

It was used at demonstrations throughout the 1860s and through the Land League campaigns of the 1880s.

Condon’s family hid the flag in an old flour sack during raids by the Black and Tans.

It was auctioned at Whyte’s in Dublin today. The estimate was €30,000 to €50,000.

The buyer was an anonymous private Irish collector.
