The actions of the US military forces and possibly of other countries would put the lives of Irish humanitarian workers in Afghanistan in grave danger, Dr Mary Henry (Ind) warned.

Several members on both sides of the House pressed for an early debate on the war.

The dangers posed to aid workers needed to be addressed urgently, said Dr Henry.

"Because who will distinguish between people from abroad there?" Apparently, more and more US planes were stopping in Shannon.

"Therefore we have to be looked on as being involved within that war."

Mr Frank Chambers (FF) said any member of a parliamentary democracy viewing some of the desecration of human life as covered on television and in the newspapers would have to question the wisdom of that type of approach to resolving international disputes.

Mr Joe Costello (Labour) said that even as the war was coming to an end more atrocities seemed to be taking place.

Mr Seβn ╙ Fearghail (FF) said he did not think there was a person in the country who had not been absolutely shocked and appalled at the scenes which had been flashed across their TV screens on the previous night from Mazar-e-Sharif.

Mr Labhrβs ╙ Murch· (FF) said there were some very worrying signs coming out of that region.
