TWO PEOPLE died and a woman and her baby were taken to hospital yesterday following fatal road traffic collisions in Sligo and Dublin.
A woman in her 40s died from the injuries she sustained in a two-vehicle collision at Ardloy near Castlebaldwin in Co Sligo.
The woman’s Nissan Almeira collided with a Mercedes, in which a woman and her three-month-old child were travelling, on the N4 Sligo to Dublin road shortly after midday. The deceased was named locally as mother-of-one Rose Holmes (46), a BB proprietor from Ballinode, Sligo.
A spokeswoman for the Health Service Executive said the other woman and her baby boy were in a stable condition in hospital.
The infant was travelling in a backseat child-restraint when the crash occurred. A senior officer said: “The mother suffered leg injuries. The boy is extremely lucky. It was a head-on crash and there is no doubt the child-restraint saved the toddler from serious injury.”
A man was killed in Co Dublin when his motorcycle collided with a car on the Balrothery Road near Balbriggan at about 8am.
The man, who was in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown.
Gardaí from Balbriggan have appealed to witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact them on 01-8020510.
Separately, an elderly woman has died following a collision in Co Waterford on Tuesday night. The woman, who was in her 80s, was driving a car when it and a van collided at Kilrush near Dungarvan.
