Families move to new homes in Ballymun scheme

Twenty families in Ballymun have moved into their new homes that have been built under the €2.5 billion regeneration of the area.

The development, part of the Ballymun Regeneration Programme, was officially opened by the Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern, this morning.

The new homes, in Shangan Crescent, are a small step towards the eventual rehousing of 10,000 people in the area from the flat complexes by the end of the decade.

It is hoped up to 500 families will have new homes by the end of this year.

The regeneration of the area also involves the creation of new social and community facilities, including a Ballymun civic centre, leisure centre and arts and community centre, the focal point of which will be a 200-seat theatre.

Planning permission has been granted for a hotel, and a new main street is being built.
