Readers' observations on nature
Recently on a bright afternoon, I saw a hedgehog scuttle across our garden to the compost heap where he tucked into an old turkey bone and cat food. Then he trundled off again. I thought that hedgehogs hibernated all winter.

Hedgehogs wake up regularly during hibernation and if they are hungry will go in search of food.
