In a flock of swans on the Barrow river in Carlow one is unlike the others. It has no black bump or black markings around its eyes, and has a longer, flatter, orange beak. In all other respects it is a swan, but we were surprised to hear it honk.

Don't feed peanuts or bread in the breeding season, but seeds and fruit can be offered.
Throughout the night of May 30th we listened to two nightjars calling in Glen Nephin, the furthest west we have ever heard them.

I was amazed yesterday to see a swallow feeding on our patio. I understood they never ground-feed and spend almost all their lives in flight except for the period of nesting.
