Extra funds for emigrants in Britain

The Government is to provide extra resources for Irish emigrants in Britain, the Tanaiste said

The Government is to provide extra resources for Irish emigrants in Britain, the Tanaiste said. Ms Harney was replying to Ms Frances Fitzgerald (FG, Dublin South East) who said a report had revealed appalling statistics about homeless Irish people in London.

Ms Harney said every year the Government gave money to welfare societies in Britain through the Dion project. "However, because of the change in the exchange rate, the value of the €1 million was reduced by 25 per cent. The Government has decided to make an additional allocation to such groups and it is right that it should do so."

She said a report of a commission on private rented accommodation in Dublin was expected at the end of July.
