An explosion rocked midtown Manhattan this evening, creating a huge plume of smoke and sending pedestrians fleeing from the scene, an eyewitness said.
New York City police said the explosion did not look suspicious and ABC-TV reported that it was as a transformer explosion.
Television pictures showed a large hole blown in a road and steam billowing out of it.
