A former Munster and Ireland rugby player appeared at Nenagh District Court yesterday charged with dangerous driving causing death.

The case involving Eddie Halvey (36), of Alandale Hall, South Circular Road, Limerick, arose out of a two-vehicle collision which occurred on the N7, near the village of Toomevara, Co Tipperary, early on April 1st this year.

Garda Declan O'Carroll told the court that he arrested Mr Halvey in Kickham Street, Nenagh, yesterday and took him to the local Garda station. The witness said Mr Halvey made no reply after being charged and cautioned.

Garda Supt Bob Noonan said Halvey had already been remanded on bail at a previous sitting of the court in respect of another charge arising out of the same incident.

He said the book of evidence on the case was still being prepared and he applied to have the case adjourned until the next sitting of the court on November 24th. He said he had no objection to extending bail to the new charge in respect of dangerous driving, thereby causing the death of a Kevin Walsh (16), from Sycamore Drive, Bruff, Co Limerick.

The alleged incident occurred at Coole, Toomevara, on the date in question. Mr Halvey had already been charged with driving with excess alcohol on the same occasion.

Judge Tim Lucey adjourned the case to November 24th for service of the book of evidence.
