Spain, which currently holds the European Union presidency, has condemned the Palestinian suicide car bomb attack which killed at least 16 people in northern Israel.

"As with similar criminal acts perpetrated in the past, the presidency of the European Union roundly condemns this morning's brutal terrorist attack which killed a high number of Israeli citizens and wounded several others," Spain said in a statement.

Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's government expressed its condolences to the families of the victims, and called for those responsible to be brought to justice.

"The presidency of the European Union reiterates its conviction that these terrorist acts only perpetuate the suffering of both peoples, Palestinians and Israelis," the statement said.

"At this time, it is necessary to redouble efforts, once again, to find an alternative to the present cycle of terrorism and violence," it said.
