The commission announced that Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain and Austria are to be prosecuted.

"Advances made in GMM risk-assessment methods, which are incorporated in EU legislation, must be taken into account in the national laws of all member states," the commission said in a statement.

"This is essential to maintain a high level of protection for human health and the environment," it said.

"The risk-assessment procedure under the revised directive takes on board not only the type of GMM (including viruses, bacteria) involved, but also the work activity. All member states should apply this approach," it continued.

The deadline for adopting the law on GMMs was June 5th, 2000.
