Temperatures remain below freezing across much of the country this morning

Leinster

In Co Longford, eight of the nine secondary schools and 25 primary schools are closed. Many schools are expected to remain closed today while people using local bus services are being advised to check with the operators to see if they are running.

The Severe Weather Group at Carlow county council is meeting in Carlow to assess the conditions on the counties roads. All priority-1 and prority-2 roads in Carlow and Kilkenny have been gritted this morning but conditions are still treacherous and everyone is being asked to avoid unnecessary journeys.

Wicklow conditions are described as treacherous between Roundwood and Kilmacanogue , while The Sally Gap and approach roads in the area remain impassable because of snow and ice. Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the area.

Temperatures remain below freezing this morning across Offaly and motorists and pedestrians are being warned about slippery conditions.

Offaly County Council have been treating several routes overnight but some secondary roads, and particularly back roads, still have a dangerous covering of snow and ice.

AA Roadwatch is warning that road conditions are particularly icy in the Birr area.

Conditions should improve throughout the day but sections of road and path that are in the shade could remain frozen throughout the day.

Connacht

In Co Galway, several schools in Ballinasloe and Portumna are closed and schools in Swinford in Co Mayo are also closed because of the poor weather conditions.

Secondary schools in Ballinrobe and Claremorris are planning to open after 11am this morning to allow temperatures to rise.

On Monday morning the toll plaza on the M6 near Ballinasloe is down to one lane in both directions due to poor road conditions, while other local roads in parts of the midlands remain impassable.

Mayo County Council grit the roads at 4am across the region.

There are reports of extremely poor driving conditions on the Foxford to Ballyvary road, Gardai say conditions are lethal.

Poor road conditions have been reported between Castlebar and Ballinrobe and on the N5 and N17 in places close to Swinford and Charlestown.

Roads around Bonniconlon, Swinford, Crossmolina and Foxford are described as lethal.

East and north of Co Galway worst affected by snow overnight, with a hard frost on the ground this morning. Extreme caution needed on all roads. Road around Ballinasloe and Westport treacherous with compacted snow.

Munster

A low level status yellow snow ice warning is in place for Clare and Limerick while an orange alert has been issued for Tipperary.

Tipperary County Council have been gritting roads from early this morning but some patches remain icy with local roads the most dangerous

Issues were reported this morning on routes across the Banner, including the Connolly to Ennis and Miltown to Inagh roads while Clare County Council responded to flooding in the Kilkee area.

There is reports of flooding around Shannon town.

Ulster

Motorists are being warned to take extreme care as treacherous driving conditions hit the Northwest this morning.

Gardai say there are reports of black ice on the majority of roads around the region this morning.

With temperatures dropping to around -4 in the early hours followed by showers of rain it has made for very slippery conditions.

Footpaths and carparks around the region are also reportedly very slippy.
