Michael Vaughan failed to register a test double hundred for the second time in a month against India today.
Yorkshire batsman Vaughan, who yesterday became only the sixth player in history to score four test tons in an English summer, finally fell to his 13th ball of the morning.
Having made a career-best 197 at Trent Bridge, the 27-year-old missed out again, this time by five runs, as a fine edge behind to a good ball from left-armer Zaheer Khan finished his six-and-a-quarter-hour vigil.
Resuming on 182 in England's overnight score of 336 for two, Vaughan caressed the second ball of the morning, from Ajit Agarkar, through the covers for four and guided a second boundary in the over to third man.
But Agarkar found his edge on 192, only for it to drop just short of VVS Laxman at second slip.
His next snick, however, brought an end to his 279-ball innings in which he struck 29 boundaries.
After Vaughan's dismissal, ball dominated bat as Zaheer and Agarkar exploited the bowler-friendly conditions.
Captain Nasser Hussain had joined John Crawley and they had progressed the score to 367 for three, with Hussain seven and Crawley unbeaten on 26.
