Ireland was found by the European Court of Justice yesterday to have failed to bring its law into line with a 1994 health and safety directive, Patrick Smyth reports. The EU's Luxembourg-based court was ruling on a complaint by the Commission that regulations governing electrical appliances for use in potentially explosive atmospheres had not yet been enacted.

The Government told the court that legislation was in the pipeline.
