Eight Iranian pilgrims have been killed in two bomb attacks near a Shia Muslim shrine in northern Baghdad, authorities said today.

Police said the deadliest strike killed five people among a group of pilgrims resting near the gold-domed Moussa al-Kadhim mosque in the Shia neighbourhood of Kazimiyah.

Nearby, a bus carrying pilgrims was hit by a car bomb in Baghdad’s Shia-dominated Shula area, killing three.

An additional 52 people were injured in the two attacks. The casualties were confirmed by hospital officials.

Earlier, police said another roadside bomb in central Baghdad killed one passer-by.
