An assailant stabbed a female Japanese tourist and shot a man in the back at the pyramids of Giza today, Egyptian hospital sources said.
It was not immediately clear whether the attacker was in police custody. Security sources had said earlier that the Egyptian gunman, who had also been injured, was apprehended.
The hospital sources said the Japanese woman, whose name was given phonetically as Yoka Shaynayoka, had a three cm (one inch) gash in her abdomen and a deep wound in her back. She was about 40 years old, they said.
The other injured person appeared to be Egyptian, the hospital sources said. He was shot in the back and had a broken leg, they said. He was thought to be about 35 years old.
Both were taken to a nearby hospital after the attack, which took place at about 11.20 a.m. (9.20 Irish time).
A witness at the pyramids in Giza, Egypt's most popular and famous tourist attraction, said he had seen four ambulances and several police cars at the scene.
He said calm quickly returned to the site of the attack, with tourists visiting the pyramids area about an hour later.
