Egypt and Jordan have agreed to send their ambassadors back to Israel following the ceasefire announced today between the Jewish state and the Palestinian Authority.

Egypt and Jordan, the only Arab countries to sign peace treaties with Israel, have not had ambassadors there since early in the Palestinian uprising that broke out in 2000.

Israel and the United States have been pressing Cairo and Amman to re-establish their embassies as a gesture of goodwill.

Today's breakthrough in the Middle East peace process at summit in Sharm el-Sheikh was hosted by the Egyptian President Mr Hosni Mubarek and attended by Jordan's King Abdullah.
