What's it like to work in DCU?

DCU is one of the most modern campuses in the country. Most of the building work has now been completed and we can all enjoy the new facilities such as the new library, research and engineering building and, of course, the Helix. The swimming pool complex opening shortly will be the icing on the cake.

Receiving research funding cheques - the bigger, the better. Although there has been a dramatic increase in research investment in Ireland with the establishment of Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the research councils, there is enormous competition for the funding. DCU and its researchers constantly strive to increase their share. We have a key role to play in the office of the vice-president for research in developing the dynamic research environment at DCU and supporting all our research staff.

The job I have has many aspects, from working closely with researchers to facilitating visits by IDA-led companies.

Universities are now expected to be not only institutes of higher education but also research centres of excellence and drivers of economic growth. Believe me there is never a dull moment.

What's the hardest part of your job?

DCU has been very successful in attracting research funding for most high-class research projects. However, being unable to obtain support for high-quality projects can be disheartening at times. This is a reality that all universities face and it will remain that way until we have sustained investment in research at levels that our OECD partners take for granted. The key is to persevere and never give up.

Where's the best place in DCU to retreat to when you need a break?

For fresh air, there is the Albert College Park on our doorstep - literally. For sustenance, there is the new DCU common room which was opened recently, known as the 1838 Club. Ideal for coffee and chocolate!

Who's your education idol? I'm not the type of person who has idols, but if I had to nominate people who influence me most, I would say my two kids, Jack and Ellie. They teach me something new every day.

If you could change one thing about DCU, what would it be?

There has been so much change in terms of the new infrastructure at DCU and also developments in the research funding system in Ireland, that a short period without any change would be welcome. However, if I had a blank cheque I would suggest DCU develops a second campus - in the Maldives.

What's unique about DCU?

What attracted me to DCU as an undergraduate was its image of being different and of being connected to the real world. Now, many years later, as a staff member, I think DCU has maintained this unique ethos. We keep an open mind, are not stuck in tradition and hold a distinct alternative position within the Irish third-level sector.
