TY TALK:Carrick-on-Shannon Community School, Co Leitrim 1 Rebecca Duffy (15) 2 Conor Cuniffe (15), 3 Shane Keane (16) 4 Rachel O'Halloran (17), give their views on a variety of topics
ON CHEATING LOVERS
Conor Cuniffe: “Tiger Woods deserves retribution for cheating on his wife, but I do have some sympathy for him – only because when other people cheat they don’t have the eyes of the world’s media on them. I think there’s more pressure on famous people.”
Rachel O’Halloran: “Tiger Woods is an idiot. He came across as so arrogant and self-serving in his big press conference. He thought he had the ‘right’ to play away. He’s not sorry at all, he’s just sorry he got caught. I don’t think many people will be able to forgive him.”
ON HAITI
Rebecca Duffy: “Shortly after the earthquake in Haiti last year, we did a class project researching what causes earthquakes. Haiti was on a major fault line, was underdeveloped, and had less resources to deal with this disaster. The world’s eyes are still on Haiti and people are still organising fundraisers. One of the third year classes here raised over €1000 in donations.”
ON SCHOOL RADIO
CC: “We run a radio station at the school called 2TY3. It’s broadcast online and all the TY students get involved in some way. I have a talk and music show.”
RD: “Our TY co-ordinator and media studies teachers recently organised a media open day. I’ve suggested a bilingual show in both the Irish and English languages, and I’ve been in touch with Irish broadcaster Bairbre Ni Donnchadh, who hosts a show on i102-104FM, a regional station.”
ROH: “Media studies has taught me a lot, and I’ve really enjoyed my show Radio Waves, which is all about what’s going on in school mixed with some music. We have our own radio studio in the school and it’s opened up a lot of new possibilities.”
ON GLEE
Shane Keane: “I played the Artful Dodger in our school musical, and I’ve good memories of it. But it all comes back when I watch Glee, the new US TV show. It’s brilliant! It’s so funny but it’s also realistic and down to earth. There’s a good mix of music, comedy, and drama in it.”
ROH: “There’s no show like Glee on TV. It’s a much more realistic depiction of school life, and it shows the awkwardness of school life: even the kids in the popular cliques want to be more popular.”
ON THE WINTER OLYMPICS
SK: “The Winter Olympics is interesting, particularly the snowboarding and bobsleighing. Even though it’s cold, it’s quite exotic.”
CC: “I’m loving the Winter Olympics, especially the snowboarding half-pipe. I’ve never done winter sports before so it’s fascinating to watch.”
