National Chamber Choir (NCC) Composition Workshops

Aimed at up-and-coming Leaving Cert composers, these composition workshops form part of the NCC's education programme for senior-cycle music students. The two-year programme gives budding composers the opportunity to learn from professional musicians and compose an original three-minute piece of music. The students' work is performed and recorded by the National Chamber Choir at the end of the two-year programme.

There is an introductory presentation at Dublin City University today from 1.45-2.45 p.m. with the NCC artistic director Celso Antunes and composer Julie Feeney.

The programme, which is free of charge, is open to all schools in the country offering music as a Leaving Certificate subject. Applications are welcomed by students interested in developing overall musicianship, and by individuals keen to pursue composition as a higher elective for the Leaving Certificate. Participants may submit their final composition for examination purposes.

There are a limited number of places available for this year's project. Teachers who would like their school to be involved can contact the NCC's education department. Tel: (01) 700 5665 or apply on-line at the NCC website, www.nationalchamberchoir.dcu.ie.
