There is a variety of well-established motor-related third-level courses in the technical, management and administrative areas.

DIT Bolton Street, Dublin, offers a four-year BSc transport technology (FT128); transport engineering cert (two years, DT160) and follow-on diploma in motor industry management (one year).

Cork IT has a cert in technology in automobile engineering (two years, CR046) and followon diploma in technology transport management and technology (one year).

Limerick IT has a cert in technology in automobile technology (two years, LC021).

NCVA/PLC courses (Level 2 is one year, Level 3 an additional year) in motor technology are an excellent way of accessing motor-related third-level courses or as direct routes into the industry. Among the colleges offering these courses are

in Cork; Kylemore College, Plunkett College and St Peter's Senior College in Dublin; Tralee Community College in Kerry and Drogheda College of Further Education in Co Louth.

Apprenticeships are in motor mechanics, vehicle body repair and auto electrician. Traineeships are being developed for windscreen repair, spray painter and exhaust fitter.

There are also part-time and distance-learning options in several colleges.

Certificate, diploma and degree, as well as PLC courses in business, office information systems, accounting and finance, marketing and sales, computing and IT, retailing and engineering are other relevant courses.

UCD will offer direct entry into its engineering programmes from 2001. The faculty provides degree programmes in agricultural and food engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electronic, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. The title for the civil engineering will be "civil engineering including structural, water, environmental, transportation and geotechnical engineering." In addition there will be an opportunity to select civil engineering or mechanical engineering first year with free choice in second year between the two specialisms. The minimum maths requirement is HC3 (electronics and electrical require HB3).
