Third-level undergraduate courses:

Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology is the only institute in the Republic to offer a third-level course in make up film/TV and theatre. There are 20 first-year places on the national certificate in make-up for film/TV and theatre. This is offered on a cyclical basis, every two years - there will be a first-year intake this autumn. It's a restricted-application course, so students must have their CAO application in before February 1st.

Career structure:

Trainee makeup artist, Assistant makeup artist, Chief makeup artist

Graduates of the various courses begin as trainees - minimum wage: £170 a week. It takes time and expertise to progress up the careers ladder and there are only 14 chief makeup artists registered with SIPTU. Source: SIPTU

UCAS options

A number of British colleges offers courses in make-up through the UCAS central applications system. For instance, the London Institute offers an honours degree in costume and make up for performing arts (makeup). Your guidance counsellor will have the UCAS handbook.
