This is the European Year of Languages and related competitions have been organised by the EU Commission, in collaboration with language departments across Europe. DCU have organised three competitions, with a closing date of June 30th. The first, for primary schoolchildren, asks participants to submit an illustration for the motto "People reach understanding by speaking to each other: European Year of Languages 2001". The second, for secondary schools, asks entrants to write about "A Flair for Languages: European Year of Languages 2001" while the third, for students in university fine arts faculties and colleges of art, requires a poster illustrating, simply, "European Year of Languages 2001." Entries to Universidad de Salamanca, Facultad de Filologia, Secretaria del Departamento de Filologia Moderna, Plaza de Anaya, s/n 37008 Salamanca, Spain.
