There are 16 people working in the order services department plus myself and two supervisors. Dell's telesales and customer service department is based in Bray, Co Wicklow. In Limerick the order services department deals with the company's 15 European sales sites.
Most of the staff have come up through the ranks. European languages are not a requirement - we speak to the sales sites in English.
My work involves people management, staff training and development and the development of processes. Project management and problem resolution are other important parts of my job.
I did a B Comm at UCC and worked for Wang Computers before I came to Dell as a planner six years ago. The planner's role is to ensure that the information we supply to the sales sites is accurate. You have to monitor production and make sure that the computer systems ordered by the site are being built.
I enjoy the diversity of my job. It's extremely fast paced. You have to be flexible and able to assimilate a lot of information - things change so rapidly in this business.
Working in the electronics industry gives you a grounding for life. You develop a very useful range of skills - you hone your thought processes and become more adept at solving problems. You have to be customer focussed and team-oriented. My work involves interaction with a number of departments. You need to be able to talk to people from a lot of different backgrounds.
