Voters across the state of Florida have started casting their ballots in the US presidential election 15 days before the rest of the country votes.

Both President Bush and Mr John Kerry are due in the battleground state where they are hoping to whip up enthusiasm among voters in a state race soured by memories of the 2000 election debacle.

Both parties are looking to get core supporters out early so they can concentrate on undecided voters.

Mr Bush owes his presidency to the 537 vote margin he eked out in Florida over Democrat Mr Al Gore four years ago, when the US Supreme Court halted recounts in the state after a bitter five-week constitutional battle.

The president campaigned in Florida on Saturday before returning to Washington, but he is due to fly back for a campaign dinner late today after a stop in New Jersey.

Mr Kerry flew in from another battleground state, Ohio, yesterday and plans to criss-cross the state today.

"You have got to get out and vote tomorrow," Mr Kerry told several thousand supporters soon after he arrived, and pounced on a quote attributed to Mr Bush in the New York Timesmagazine that suggested the president would privatise social security.

Mr Bush asked for the votes of supporters in a string of Florida rallies on Saturday, in which he depicted the veteran Massachusetts senator as unfit to lead.

Sunday was "the one-year anniversary of Senator Kerry's vote against funding our troops" in Iraq, the president said. "He abandoned our troops in combat by voting against the funding," Mr Bush added.

Two new opinion polls out today contrasted, with Mr Bush in a decisive lead in one and both candidates deadlocked in the other.

Mr Bush climbed to an eight-point lead over Democratic Party challenger Senator John Kerry in a USAToday/CNN/Gallup poll. However, a Reuters/Zogby poll showed Mr Kerry and Mr Bush deadlocked at 45 per cent apiece.
