SONY PRS 600 TOUCH EDITION €289 PROS: Sony's latest Reader includes a touch-screen and a facility which allows you to make notes in your own handwriting on the e-books.

It also ditches the single-colour format that Sony had adopted for its e-book readers, adding readers with black and red cases alongside the regulation silver.

CONS: The 512MB of included memory isn't as high as other rival readers, but can be expanded with SD and memory-stick cards.

PROS: Small, light and straightforward to use, the Cool-er book reader has 1GB of internal memory to store all those books you've never got around to reading. Memory can be expanded with a 4GB SD card.

CONS: Often compared to the Amazon Kindle, the Cool-er lacks the wireless access of its rival.

iREX DIGITAL READER 1000 S €699

PROS: The 10.2in screen is larger than that of most e-readers, giving a larger reading area and displaying digital newspapers, books, magazines and documents in a way that's closer to the real thing. It also enables you to make handwritten notes on your documents.

CONS: The price. At €699, it's far more expensive than its rivals.

BOOKEEN CYBOOK OPUS €255

PRO: weighing only as much as a mobile phone, the Cybook Opus is the ultimate in portable e-book readers. Up to 1GB of memory will hold more than 1,000 books without the need to use the MicroSD slot, and the rechargeable battery will last 8,000 page turns. The device also has motion-sensor technology, which switches page orientation from portrait to landscape mode automatically.

CONS: The compact size mean a smaller screen than other e-readers, at 5in.

BEBOOK E-READER €305

PROS: Battery life on the BeBook is impressive, with 7,000 page turns promised from a full charge. It is also compatible with MP3 files and audiobooks, and a range of file types including text files, PDFs, e-pub books, and compressed archives such as rar and zip files.

CONS: It has a smaller capacity than other e-book readers, at only 512MB.
