Paris - The guardian of the French Constitution, Mr Roland Dumas (76), announced yesterday he was temporarily stepping down in order to fight allegations of corruption involving the oil giant Elf-Aquitaine.

A former high-flying Socialist foreign minister, Mr Dumas, as head of the Constitutional Council, is the fifth-ranking official in the state hierarchy.
