Dublin man gets life for murder

A DUBLIN man was jailed for life by the Central Criminal Court yesterday after pleading guilty to murder

A DUBLIN man was jailed for life by the Central Criminal Court yesterday after pleading guilty to murder. Philip Hanley (29), of Balbutcher Lane, Ballymun, admitted shooting dead factory worker Anthony Lynch (42), at Willow Park Road, Ballymun, on June 1st last year.

Mr Justice Carney said he had examined the book of evidence. "Ordinarily I would take the view that the people of Ireland are entitled to an explanation as to why the life of one of their number has been extinguished. Ordinarily I would require that the statements made by the accused be opened so that the people of Ireland would have that explanation.

"I have read the statements and in the present case to do so would cause distress to individuals who deserve not to have that kind of distress caused to them."
