Dublin fire causes major commuter disruption

A FIRE AT an abandoned building caused major disruption to commuters in Dublin city centre last night.

A FIRE AT an abandoned building caused major disruption to commuters in Dublin city centre last night.

The blaze broke out at Film House on Middle Abbey Street some time before 5.30pm.

The boarded-up building is located at the edge of a site cleared for development which is near Liffey Street.

At least four units of Dublin Fire Brigade arrived at the blaze after 5.30pm, along with gardaí.

The street was cordoned off by gardaí between Liffey Street and Millennium Walkway.

Luas Red Line services were stopped between Smithfield and Connolly Station for much of yesterday evening. The service continued running between Smithfield and Tallaght.

Dozens of shoppers and commuters stood by and watched the fire which covered much of the city centre in smoke. There were no reports of injuries.

Gardaí are investigating the cause of the fire.
