Protests by hackney drivers in Dublin city-centre are to be repeated every Friday until the demands of drivers are met, according to the organisers of yesterday's march to Leinster House.

About 400 hackney drivers gathered outside Leinster House yesterday morning to protest at what they claim are unfair restrictions which prohibit them from using bus lanes and from introducing bumper identification plates.

Mr Joe Smith, of the Irish Cab Drivers' Association, said that the protests would continue every Friday until their demands were met by the Minister for the Environment, Mr Dempsey.

Ms Olivia Mitchell, the Fine Gael TD, condemned the march, saying that disrupting the city on a wet November morning simply added to the traffic misery suffered daily by tens of thousands of Dubliners.
