Up to €11 million found in forgotten bank accounts will be allocated to local community projects in coming weeks.

The latest monies from the Dormant Accounts Fund scheme will be distributed to local Rapid projects which tackle social disadvantage around the country.

Community Affairs Minister Eamon O'Cuiv and Minister of State Noel Ahern will have ministerial responsibility for the disbursement.

The Government approved the latest disbursement plan at its Cabinet meeting this week. Under the Dormant Accounts Act (2001), money was seized from bank accounts which have lay idle since 1987.

Funds have already supported hundreds of projects aimed at easing poverty and social deprivation, supporting people with disabilities and improving educational disadvantage.
