A Medical Council inquiry into the fitness to practise of a consultant alleged to have performed an excessive number of hysterectomies is to be held in private.

The Fitness to Practise Committee of the council yesterday began its inquiry into hysterectomies performed by consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist Dr Michael Neary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Representatives of women whose wombs had been removed by Dr Neary had argued that the inquiry should be in public.
