A young doctor was in critical condition last night after being seriously injured in a car crash in Co Donegal yesterday. The single-vehicle crash happened just after 9.30am at Meenacuing, Gaoth Dobhair.

The incident occurred on a notorious stretch of the N56 road which claimed the lives of a mother and daughter two years ago when a motorist lost control of his car.

It is believed the doctor is from Co Tipperary. He is based in Dungloe and was travelling there at the time.

The car flipped over on to its roof and came to rest along a picnic area after it struck a wall.

Ambulance personnel and the fire service spent a long time at the scene of the crash.

He was then taken to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The road was closed for a number of hours.
